GIORGIO VIGNA biography
Born in Verona 1955, Giorgio Vigna spent his formative years at art school. He started his artistic career in the theatre as costume and set designer. He then worked in art publishing, where he learned and experimented with traditional marbling techniques, later applying them to porcelain, ceramic, paper, fabric, wood and glass. He experimented with engraving techniques in the workshop of the Calcografia Nazionale in Rome. At the same time he designed and created jewellery and sculptures to be worn as ornaments. He expanded his research on glass, starting in 1997 an intense collaboration with Venini. He designed for the Venetian company several glass pieces, among which a collection of unique pieces called Fuochi d’acqua (2002), the first Venini glass jewellery collection Talismani (1998) and the limited edition vase Fior d’acqua for the Millennium III collection (1999). For the Venini 85th anniversary he designed a light sculpture: Luce Siderale. He was artistic director for the Venini project of jewels in gold and glass. In 1997 he was invited by the International Glass Research Center of Nuutajarvi, Finland, to conduct a workshop on glass jewellery for the students of Hame Polytechnic. It was in Nuutajärvi workshop where Vigna came into contact with the Finnish company Iittala. This contact led over the years Vigna to design the new collection of the renowned Iittala Birds in glass, the Vigna Collection, internationally launched in 2007. In 2010 Vigna designed for the same company Piilo, a collection of sculptures thought to be placed in home, and Piilo Amulet, the first jewellery collection of Iittala. In 2005 Vigna designed the silver objects Sassi and Calligramma for the company Gabriele De Vecchi. He created in 2006 a glass jewellery collection as well as unique pieces for Salviati. In 2007 he designed for Acqua di Parma the perfume bottle of Colonia edizione Murano, using the ancient glass working techniques of the Venetian island. During his artistic path Vigna also created fabrics for theatrical costumes and marbled paper for opera sets, jewellery for operas (among them Salomé and Don Carlos by Pier Luigi Pizzi) and cinema movies (Belly of an Architect by Peter Greenaway, Stealing Beauty by Bernardo Bertolucci, Le fate ignoranti by Ferzan Ozpetek, Agata e la tempesta by Silvio Soldini, L‘odore del sangue by Mario Martone, The Palermo shooting by Wim Wenders), as well as special jewellery collections for international fashion designers.
In 2007 he participated as a lecturer in Festival della Mente in Sarzana, presenting his artistic research within ApprofonditaMente conferences.
His unique glass pieces were on display in the solo exhibition Nature di vetro (2003) held in collaboration with Venini at Museo Correr in Venice and Museo di Villa Pignatelli in Naples, and in the collective exhibition ‘Vetri. Nel mondo. Oggi’ (2004) at the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti.
